Tuesday, June 4, 2024 (Day 29)
Dartmouth, Nova Scotia / 8:25 a.m. / 14 degrees to Hackett’s Cove / 4:25 p.m. / 21 degrees for a total of 126.6 km of driving.
Another day, another friend. We are off to have breakfast with one of our previous neighbours who called Ottawa home for many, many years. So nice to have the opportunity to meet in person and catch up. We met at the Esquire Restaurant on the Bedford Highway just outside of Halifax. A nice community restaurant and a great meal.
We took the scenic route on our way to Peggy’s Cove via Herring Cove, Portuguese Cove and Ketch Harbour. Nice highway and some beautiful homes.
As we enter the Peggy’s Cove area, we stop in to the Visitor Centre. As previously mentioned, we always like to check out these centres when travelling. Lots of great information.
We arrive at Peggy’s Cove, a popular tourism location. There is so much rock in this area. This is beautiful location but it can also be very dangerous especially when the rock is wet. It can never be stated enough to use caution. Upon approaching the famous lighthouse, it is the wind that surprised me the most. My hat almost got away from me. Changes have been made over the years to make this popular tourism site more accessible. For those visiting the area there is a restaurant, ice cream spot and varied gift shops.
Once back on the highway and not very far from Peggy’s Cove, we come across the “SwissAir Memorial Site” to remember those who lost their life September 2, 1998 Flight 111 when all 229 people on board perished. We stopped to pay homage.
As we continue along, we’d make our way to our next stop, Hackett’s Cove. We will be staying with our neighbour’s sister and brother-in-law whom we have met on various occasions. They have a beautiful home overlooking St. Margaret’s Bay.
For supper we will be heading to “Sou’Wester Gift & Restaurant Company Ltd.”. Carol-Ann has eaten lobster before but never a fresh whole lobster. Thank goodness our host could walk me through the steps of ensuring how to get to each piece succulent piece of lobster and not leaving any piece behind. This is a true feat of earning each bite. Very happy to have had this memorable opportunity. Be sure to check out the picture below of my dinner plate. Everyone else enjoyed their fish and chips. Food was very good and would recommend should anyone be visiting this area.
Back to their home to enjoy a magnificent sunset. What a way to finish the day!
