Tuesday, June 11, 2024 (Day 36)

Woodstock, New Brunswick / 9:50 a.m. / 18 degrees to Miramichi, New Brunswick / 7:51 p.m. / 21 degrees for a total of 440.5 km of driving.

As we start today’s journey we are noticing the New Brunswick fields of potatoes.  The crops have started to sprout so seeing some green.  The land is not red like Prince Edward Island (P. E.I.)  but still just as interesting.

We have arrived at what was the site of Covered Bridge Potato Chip factory.  Unfortunately, there is nothing left to the factory after an unfortunate fire on Friday, March 1, 2024.  It has been noted that the owner plans to rebuild and is making alternate arrangements in the meantime.  What is left is the shortest covered bridge in the world.  So cute, including a picture below.

We are now on our way to the longest covered bridge in the world located in Hartland, New Brunswick.  She is s beauty.  About 15 minutes down the road we come across the “Old Florenceville Bridge”  that is half covered (wood) and half steel.  So many covered bridges to discover.

New Brunswick also has a potato museum.  It sounds like it has similar items like the potatoes museum in P.E.I., therefore, we will take a pass on this one.

Today we see a couple more deer in the field.  No New Brunswick moose thus far.

We did find one of the covered bridges noted in the 2025 calendar we purchased.  It is the “Ellis” bridge, a feeling of accomplishment.

We have arrived in Fredericton, New Brunswick and as we drive around we come across the University of New Brunswick.  This university was established in 1785 and is Canada’s oldest English language university.  The campus is so impressive.

We continue on our way to Oromocto and then Gagetown.  Gagetown is home to the 2nd largest military base in Canada.

Miramichi, home to the Federal Government Pay Centre will be our final stop for the night.  We have beautiful weather conditions so will take advantage and drive a little later.  As we scope out our route on the secondary highways we realize we will save some time if we take a ferry.  Too funny, as we said we would limit the number of ferries on this trip but there are so many you can take within the Atlantic provinces.  This one will take us to Lower Jemseg across from Gagetown.  It is a free cable ferry that will take about 5 minutes.

We always find it interesting the sights we see on the secondary highways. Farms/crops, wildlife, churches, factories/industries, etc.  For instance after the ferry we saw 2 eagles in their nest.  Next in Chipman. New Brunswick, we came across the Irving Grand Lake Timber Sawmill.  This place is huge.

At Doaktown, we turned and headed to Miramichi only to find out afterwards that not far from Doaktown in the other direction, we would have seen the oldest covered bridge. Oh! Well, we won’t get them all and maybe if we visit New Brunswick again in the future we will plan it out to find more covered bridges.

Note:  We visited 5 covered bridges today.  Our New Brunswick total thus far is 17.
