Thursday, May 30, 2024 (Day 24)
Morell, Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) / 6:50 a.m. / 10 degrees to Moncton, New Brunswick / 4:30 p.m. / 18 degrees for a total of 382.9 km of driving.
Today we bid farewell to the beautiful red sand fields and beaches of P.E.I. We have definitely enjoyed our travels through this province. A car wash is a must to see if we can remove some of the remnants of red sand.
We will finish our drive around the bottom of the island from Montague to Murray River and circle back to Wood Islands where we came in by ferry and then a different route through Charlottetown. An interesting site along the way, something we don't see at home is a pump for furnace oil at a gas station.
A nice strip mall near Poplar Island was worth a stop. Although not all places were open they look appetizing including Boom Burger and Grilled Cheesery (wood fired grilled cheese). Within this strip mall you will also find Anne of Green Gables Chocolates with views to production of the employees making chocolates. The Cows Creamery is a must. This is their main location where all the magic begun. If you have not tried their ice cream on your east coast travels, it is so worth it, if you like ice cream of course. Their chocolate covered potato chips are a delicacy and of course there is their cows merchandise. This location provides an inside look at the history of this P.E.I. company including production of their famous ice cream, their logos and so much more.
Then it is off to Summerside to capture a glimpse of the last of the main tourism towns on the island prior to heading to Borden-Carleton for our trip across the Confederation Bridge that will bring us to New Brunswick. What a beautiful and long bridge. A true appreciation to the work that went in to creating this beauty.
We will make our way to Shediac with a couple of stops along the way to some beaches including Plage Aboiteau Beach and Parlee Beach Provincial Park. Parlee has some nice sand dunes similar to P.E.I. Although the temperature was around 18 degrees, the white sand was so warm.
In Shediac we stopped for lunch at the Lobster Deck. All food choices were enjoyed including Lobster club house, fish & chips and seafood lasagna.
Off to our final destination for the night, Moncton but not before a stop a Magnetic Hill. We must have arrived just before closing as one attendant explained how it works and then left so we got to try it a few times as no one else was there. This is a phenomenon that is hard to wrap your head around. Drive up to the white marker, put your vehicle in neutral and then get pulled backwards up to a speed of 19 km. Need to be comfortable backing up. Pretty cool to say the least.
