Saturday, June 1, 2024 (Day 26)

 Truro, Nova Scotia / 7:35 a.m. / 9 degrees to Dartmouth, Nova Scotia / 5:00 p.m. / 15 degrees for a total of 405.7 km of driving.

After breakfast at our hotel, we decided to head back to Five Islands to see the Tidal Bore.  Unfortunately, we misunderstood the tidal bore times so we missed seeing the tide come in.  The trip was not wasted as it gave us a great comparison of what the area looked like with water.  The same comparison pictures of May 31 and June 1, 2024 are included below.

On our way back towards Truro, we went to see if we could find the posted “Economy Falls” but did not have success as it was not clear how far a walk it was off the path from the parking area.

We stopped at Masstown.  On one side is a market (appeared to be selling vegetables and plants), we did not visit as there were a lot of cars.  On the other side of the road is a Petro Canada (gas station) with a Tim Hortons.  Next to it is a Creamery and Butcher.  Nice place for a bathroom break and they also have a Cafe that sells sandwiches, baked goods and ice cream made with products from the Creamery.  We shared a delicious grilled cheese made with garlic butter and had an ice cream cone.  Reasonable prices.  We were not buying anything at the Butchery but can tell you their T-Bone steaks looked heavenly.  If we were staying in the area and had access to a bar-b-que we would definitely buy meat from this location.  The Creamery had many varieties of cheese to pick from.  They also sell mini package (samples) with a couple of pieces of cheese and pepperettes, cheese curds, etc.  Great way to try their products.  Note: For those from the Ottawa area reading this, St. Albert’s Cheese curds (squeaky cheese) is still our favourite, they are hard to beat.  It appears you could also watch the production of the cheese when the line is running (was not when we were there).  A worthwhile stop.

We are by-passing Truro and New Glasgow as we take the scenic route via Sheet Harbour.  The majority of this road on Highway 374 is beautiful.  Some newly paved and another major section recently paved in the last year.  What a nice surprise for a secondary highway.

Once on Highway 7 after Sheet Harbour we did see a nice little water falls.  A great spot for a stop and brief stretch.

As we are now making our way towards Dartmouth-Halifax,  We started to check out hotel availability and were surprised there was limited options.  Found out later from a previous work colleague that the international Grand Prix Sailboat Competition (Catamaran) event was being held on the harbour Saturday, June 2 & Sunday, June 3rd.  First time this event was being held in Canada.  A new Sandman hotel in Dartmouth had limited availability so we jumped at the opportunity to stay there.  Nice modern hotel with lots of activity especially with hockey players in town for a tournament.  Denny’s restaurant attached to the hotel, open 24 hours away.  Shell and Tim Hortons in the next parking lot.  Good location with choices.
