Wednesday, May 8, 2024 (Day 2)

Baie Comeau, Quebec / 5:50 a.m. / 5 degrees to Labrador City, Labrador / 3:03 p.m. 5 degrees for a total of 594.3 km of driving.  Beautiful day for driving until we came upon gravel road between Manac 5 (major Quebec hydro dam) and Gagnon, Quebec.  Another patch for 45 km which ended about 40 km’s before Labrador City.

A few highlights:
-A great stretch of the highway from Baie Comeau was great for driving until we hit gravel.  It was also a curvy road with enough transport trucks.
-No cell service but Quebec is great to make SOS phones available at various intervals.
-Manic 5 hydro dam is massive.  We stopped and it would be worthwhile to do the tour.  Unfortunately tours do not start until June. (picture)
-40 km outside of Labrador City is a very large mine (still in Quebec), only to discover that Labrador City is a mining town with a couple of mines of their own.  A large mining rig sits outside one of the mines main entrance.  Great photo op to see the sheer massive size of these rigs. it is also lit up at night. (picture)
-Always a fun stop at travel info and the one in Labrador City did not disappoint. Great staff and small museum located within the building.
-We saw wildlife including a fox and a moose, just not fast enough with the camera.
-A good hotel (Two Seasons Inn) with comfy bed and pillows.  2nd day with a wonderful meal at a hotel restaurant.
-A local from Labrador City that met our nephew on a southern holiday last month kindly gave us a full tour of the city (1 hour).  The greatest thing we learnt is that the City of Labrador (covered through property taxes) sweeps residents lawns.  Yes, you read correctly, they sweep their lawns with a machine as they use sand in the roads each winter.
