Tuesday, May 28, 2024 (Day 22)
Morell, Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) / 8:15 a.m. / 14 degrees to Morell, Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.) / 9:15 p.m. / 16 degrees for a total of 482 km of driving.
We had breakfast in the hotel cottage before heading out for the day. It is raining lightly but that won't dampen our day.
We will make our way toward Cavendish, P.E.I. The rain has stopped, with a light mist and cloudy. The roads are pretty good thus far. We noticed these black things floating in the water as we mentioned before. The black pods in the water are very similar to one's we saw in Nova Scotia. So we pulled into the wharf and got out of the vehicle and we could hear singing. We walked over to the container box (their work area) that it was coming out of and these 3 men were in there. One was singing and the other two were harmonizing along with him. We then asked what they were doing and they explained they were prepping pods for oysters, so we asked a few questions about their business. They were sizing them up by weight/size and explained the process to grow these oysters to a larger size. They offered us a taste and proceeded to open one up and Perry's sister swallowed it down. They ate a few then we were on our way. Interesting and glad we made the stop.
Lots of fishing boats out today. Getting windy but no rain. As we venture, it is very obvious the damage from Hurricane Fiona September 2022.
We stopped at the Cavendish Tourist information. When travelling, we enjoy stopping at these locations as they provide a lot of interesting information about the area, things to see and do, places to eat, etc.
A couple of us walked the boardwalk between MacNeills Brook and Oceanview near Cavendish beach. Checked out a few souvenir shops and enjoyed an ice cream cone at Cows. There are a couple of Cows locations on the island including Cavendish and Charlottetown. You can enjoy this delicious treat or even their chocolate covered potato chips are worthwhile trying. They also have a retail store with a large selection of cow items, t-shirts, etc. This establishment was created back in 1983 in Cavendish, P.E.I.
We are now heading to O'Leary, P.E.I. as they have a potato museum as we are curious about potato farms, there are so many of them in P.E.I. The museum was okay (did not answer all of our questions), it is too bad the farm tours they offer (at a cost) don't start until the end of June. We ate at the PEI Potato Country Kitchen. They serve a limited menu of everything potato including potato soup, baked potatoes, potato skins, french fries, etc. It was good...if you like potatoes. We all agree it would be neat to come back in the fall when they harvest their potato crops.
Saw a sign advertising a future "kitchen party" event. We did not get an opportunity to try one of these events but hear it is a fun time with song, dance and food. Maybe something to add to the list for a future trip.
As we make our way to one end of the island, we stop at one of it's points called "North Cape". Beautiful lighthouse and you could really see the tide was out and the different colours of water.
Making our way down the coast we stopped at Skinners Pond, home to Stopping Tom Connors. The "Stomping Tom Centre" (10 acre property) opens June 1, 2024. They honour his many contributions to Canada and celebrate his achievements. There is a restaurant at this location and they host events with music. If coming back, this is definitely a spot we would love to check out as we enjoy his music.
Now making our way towards the West Point and their lighthouse. We see many wind turbines along the way. Unfortunately, it is now raining so a drive by of the lighthouse will have to suffice.
It's been a long but exhilarating day, time to call it a day.
