Tuesday, May 21, 2024 (Day 15)
Cornerbrook, Newfoundland / 11:05 a.m. / 17 degrees to Port-aux-Basques, Newfoundland / 5:21 p.m. / 8 degrees for a total of 313.6 km of driving.
We had breakfast at Jungle Jim's (attached to the hotel) before starting our day. We each had omelettes, home fries and toast. Very good omelettes and quite large.
We stopped at the Travel Information Kiosk across from the hotel but it is still closed for the season. It started out as overcast and then turned to rain as we make our way around the city to do a brief tour. The roads in this city are either going up large hills or down the other side. We read there is a large pulp mill here in Cornerbrook so we did a drive by. In Ontario and Quebec we are used to seeing large trees. even British Columbia's are larger and thicker than the one's at home. The one's here are mainly pine trees and a lot slimmer 4-6 inches round. We drove past the Western Memorial Regional Hospital and commented to each other that it looked pretty new, only to find out it is scheduled to open June 2, 2024. We are sure this will be a great addition to this community.
As we travel on, Carol-Ann missed Stephenville. We were going to check it out although with the rain, it was not as tempting so will continue on our path to Port-aux-Basques. We had also decided to pass on a day trip to Burgeo due to the possible road conditions. We love travelling the unbeaten path, locations that not every one will visit but we have also found the road conditions within Newfoundland are not ideal.
Just coming in to Port-aux-Basques, we stopped at the Travel Information Kiosk. A great amount of pamphlets regarding all of Newfoundland are available for the taking. When speaking to one of the employees we asked for recommendation of what to see in the area, she mentioned about the Rose Blanche lighthouse. It was early afternoon so we decided to check it out. In general the roads were not too bad. Once we made it there, we spoke for awhile to one of the employees prior to heading out for a walk to the lighthouse. We took the flat walk out and returned by the hillier one. Generally there is admission to be paid but since we were ahead of the season, it was free. A beautiful lighthouse.
The round trip was around 2 hours. We headed to St. Christopher's Hotel where we would be staying for the night. Rooms are not too bad, bathroom is small and when someone uses the desk and chair, you can't walk pass. We ate supper at the restaurant at the hotel. The food was okay. There was a boil water advisory on.
Called it a night and prepare for the next day.
