Sunday, May 19, 2024 (Day 13)
Clarenville, Newfoundland / 7:34 a.m. / 4 degrees to King's Point, Newfoundland / 6:37 p.m. / 6 degrees for a total of 686.9 km driving.
We enjoyed our complimentary breakfast at Bella's Casual Dining within the hotel. The free voucher gave us the choice of (1) 2 Scrambled eggs, homefries, toast and bacon (2) Pancakes and bacon (3) Continental Breakfast (cereal, muffin, yogurt and juice). All options included Tea or Coffee. We stopped for coffee at Tim Hortons and were on our way for another day of adventure exploring Newfoundland.
Less than 30 minutes of being on the road we saw a coyote (no picture). Driving by Terra Nova National Park, so nice when they provide outdoor bathroom facilities. We are still seeing snow in the mountains. Never knew how popular Mary's Brown and Robin's Donuts are in Newfoundland.
We are making our way to the Mushgrave Harbour and Twillingate loop today. Never knew how stony this area is with the various stones (all sizes) visible in the water. This is one of Carol-Ann's favourites. Highway has been good so far. Phew! We saw a duck mom and her 3 ducklings. We checked out a cute little town called Newton, some peoples neighbours are huge stones. It must be hard to build a home. There was a touch of stink (for lack of a better choice), it must be when the tide is out. Saw a bald eagle (no picture to share). Mushgrave Harbour was to tentatively be one of our overnight stays but glad we did not stay here. We did not see much, maybe there is other road in the town to check out that we did not. Getting some great fuel mileage today. 6.6 litre per 100 km. He is driving a touch over the speed limit at 85 km an hour.
We decided to check out Farewell, Newfoundland. This is where the ferry for Fogo Island can be taken. We will not be making this trip but the folks we met from Fermont, Quebec will be. We are now heading towards to Twillingate but first drove past the sign "Dildo Run Provincial Park", honestly, not sure who made up these names. 😂 Upon arriving in Twillingate, we drove along the Main Street from one end to the other. We saw Harbour Lights Inn, a grand-mother's home to a previous colleague's husband, Crow's Nest Cafe is supposed to have amazing pea soup. The Cafe only opens June 5th. Did not find White Emporium on our travels but here it is worth checking out. Beautiful views from Long Point Lighthouse. I am sure when icebergs start to come in to Twillingate, this is where everyone stops. The gift shop has some great knick knacks and delicious fudge. Try their fudge, white fudge with partridgeberry was pretty good. It is always great having the opportunity to speak to the locals.
We do a lot of our travels without booking hotels in advance as it depends on many factors including weather and what we may see. Today provided to be a little difficult in deciding where to stay based on the choices as Lewisporte, Bishop's Falls and Grand Falls-Windsor were not appealing.
We found Roy's Pub, Dining, Motel and Event Centre in King's Point. King's Point was a great spot last week to see whales so why not. They rent out 3 newly created rooms with bathroom, small fridge microwave, etc. It was great. We went to the pub (closed at 8:00 p.m.) after arriving to get a drink and a snack/late supper. It was a wonderful evening as we chatted with the locals including a gentleman who is running in the next local election. We heard the Newfoundland premier was in King's Point a few days ago.
