Saturday, May 11, 2024 (Day 5)
St. Anthony’s / 11:00 a.m. / 3 degrees to Cow Head, Newfoundland / 6:30 p.m. / 8 degrees for a total of 405.2 km driving.
A relaxed start to the day. After our complimentary continental breakfast we were on the hunt for icebergs. We had joined the Facebook group “Newfoundland & Labrador Iceberg Reports” administered by Diane Davis. This was very helpful in determining where icebergs are located on a specific day. We in turn updated the page as we saw icebergs to share the information. We drove around St. Anthony’s spotting some and a local advised of another area. It was so much fun and so exciting. The skies cleared up and it was glorious. So fortunate to see so many beautiful icebergs.
We made our way to L’Anse aux Meadows, site established by Vikings hoping to see sod buildings. It is a tourist area and not yet open. Unfortunately, we were not able to see them but did run in to a nice couple from Massachusetts travelling like ourselves.
A glimpse of wildlife on our day travels with 10 Caribou at different times and 2 Moose, so nice. Pictures included.
We got a taste of some of Newfoundland’s pothole highways! Yikes! One was under construction and it must have been bad as what was remaining was pretty rough on Hwy 432 after Main Brook.
Making our way to Cow Head for the night at Shallow Bay Motel & Cabins (will share more tomorrow). The views of Gulf of St. Lawrence along Hwy 430 were breathtaking. So thankful for gorgeous weather.
