Monday, May 20, 2024 (Day 14)
King's Point, Newfoundland / 6:56 a.m. / 3 degrees to Cornerbrook, Newfoundland / 4:54 p.m. / 20 degrees for a total of 402.4 km of driving.
After leaving our hotel room at Roy's Pub, Dining, Motel and Event Centre in King's Point, we returned to where we had seen the whale on Sunday, May 12th, which was a couple of kilometers away. Such a beautiful morning, the sun is shining, the waters are so calm, you can see the reflection on the water. Perry spoke to one of the locals (tried to speak to one of the locals who had the full newfie dialect) and understood that we should travel around the cove. We drove around the cove towards Rattling Brook. Such a great recommendation as not only could we see a whale but we could actually hear the whale (the sound from his blowhole), music to our ears. Such a sweet sound! We are feeling so, so fortunate once again! After about two hours and having so much fun following the whale, we were on our way. Note: We actually think there may have been two whales but did not see them both at the same time it was just the timing of their appearances.
We stopped for Tim Hortons coffee and bagels in Springdale to decide which time slot of the Western Brook Pond Tour (Gros Morne National Park) boat tour with Bon Tours we were going to take as we had checked the weather forecast the day before and knew today would be the best weather day as Tuesday was calling for rain. Upon making our online reservation we realized since it is May there is only one time slot to select (12:30 p.m.) and not the four options during peak season. A quick gauge of our time made us realize we would have to leave asap and Perry may need to make up some time on the Trans Canada Highway (not going to be our best fuel mileage day). The key factor is that we needed to arrive 1 hour in advance of 12:30 p.m. as you either walk the 3 km trail to get to the boat or hitch a ride via golf cart (an additional $10 per person return trip - cash only). We found the directions were not 100% clear as it said 27 kilometers north of Rocky Harbour. We actually needed to stay on Route 430 and go past Sally's Cove where on the right side of the highway is a parking lot where you park and walk in. We arrived at 11:30 and not a moment to spare, even after seeing a moose on the side of the highway during our travels. The Trans Canada Highway was quiet (we hear everyone goes camping on the May 2-4 weekend in Newfoundland). We took our Bonine tablets (for seasickness), got a ride on the golf cart and checked in at the cafe at the end of the 3 km trail. We recommend if you can make this boat trip, it is well worth the 2 hour boat ride. It is absolutely gorgeous terrain and the gorgeous weather we had was an additional bonus. Including some pictures but they don't do it justice. We sat at the back of the boat on the main level and liked it. There is an upper level but it can be windy at times (depending on the weather). We met a nice couple from Pennsylvania and chatted on the return portion of the boat ride and shared some of the locations to find icebergs.
After our boat tour, we decided to head towards Cornerbrook for the night. We stayed at the Comfort Inn (not as nice as the Gander location) but did the trick. There is also a Quality Inn on the next block but the reviews were so/so. We enjoyed our supper at the Jungle Jim's Eatery that is attached to the hotel. We each had a different stir fry. Carol-Ann had the "Chocolate Monkey" alcoholic drink made with ice cream. It was yummy almost like a dessert. Note: Jungle Jim eateries are very popular in the East Coast.
